<article><hdr>Airborne shot of C-121A Constellation</hdr><body>
<hi style=afpcap>The USAAF obtained the Constellation through requisitioning commercial L.049 versions which were destined for Trans World Airways. These were designated the C-69 in military service, and served in Air Transport Command during 1945 before being resold to the airlines the folllowing year. The first Constellations ordered fro the Air Force were L.749s which were allocated the designation C-121A, with ten purchased in 1948, one of which was converted to a VC-121B. These served with MATS, and were frequently employed on VIP tasks due to their range, speed and comfort. They served for more than 20 years before being retired and eventually sold to civilian owners. The illustration depicts the fifth C-121A 48-612 in the markings of MATS Atlantic Division.</hi>
